[Q 162] Islamic Ruling on Women Wearing Tight Jeans

Question

A sister is asking about the ruling for wearing jeans – are muslim women allowed to wear jeans ( tight fitting like a legging) with a dress ontop which goes over the knees, so the lower part of the leg shape is visible when she is outside.

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

Such jeans that only non Muslims or sinful women (فاسقات) wear and virtuous women of noble families do not wear them, they are forbidden to wear them because it is forbidden to resemble non Muslims and sinners.

And those tights that even the women of respected households also wear, then wearing them is permissible but only when it does not create a situation of immodesty and if it creates a situation of immodesty then it will also become impermissible.

The principle regarding immodesty is that if any woman exposes the part of her body from the navel to the knee in front of another woman or a man (mahram or non-mahram) , then it is not permissible. And the tight-fitting clothes that reveal the shape of the body are also like exposing the body.

Therefore, the ruling on wearing tights will be as follows:

For any Muslim sister to wear tights outside the house or in house in front of any non-mahram in such a way that the shape of the body is visible, this is forbidden.

Similarly, to wear them in front of a mahram man or any woman in such a way that the shape of the knee or thighs above it, etc become visible, this is also forbidden.

However if she wears them in front of a mahram or a woman in such a way that the shape of the knee or above it, is not visible, or wears them in front of her husband, then there is no sin, but since this is against the way of the righteous, it is better to avoid it altogether, especially the people of knowledge and virtuous women should stay away from it at all costs.
