The Concept of Hadir and Nazir

What is the meaning of hadir and nazir? Do they have different meanings?

Why is it permissible to call the prophet hadir and nazir but we have to call Allah Shaahid?


The literal meaning of Hadir is “To be present with one’s body” and the literal meaning of Nazir is “To see with one’s eyes”

To call Allah Hadir and Nazir is prohibited, because he is free from a body and physicality.

Whereas, there is not a single type of Shar’i deficiency in the Noble Prophet ﷺ being Hadir and Nazir. So, to consider he ﷺ as Hadir and Nazir is permissible.

The meaning of Hadir and Nazir is that by the power given by Allah by which someone, whilst present at a single place can see the entire universe (i.e. the entire universe, the earth, the sky, the throne, the tablet (لوح), the pen, the angles) as one sees the palm of his hand. He can hear the distance and the near voices and that in one moment can travel in a single moment. That he can fulfill the need of the one who is in need thousands of miles away. This movement may be with the body (مثالي) or spiritually or with the blessed body that is buried in the grave.

Allah عزوجل says in the Quran (33:45)

“يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ شَـٰهِدًۭا وَمُبَشِّرًۭا وَنَذِيرًۭا(45)”

Translation from Kanz ul irfaan: Oh the one who informs of the unseen (النبي) we have sent you as Hadir and Nazir, and a giver of glad tidings and a warner.”

Sadr ul-Afaadil Mufti Na’eem ul-Din Muradabadi رحمه الله says: The translation of “شٰهدا” as Hadir and Nazir is a very suitable translation.

It is stated in “مفردات الراغب”:

الشهود والشهادة الحضور مع المشاهدة إما بالبصر أو بالبصيرة

Translation: The meaning of شهود and شهادة is being Hadir alongside being Nazir, whether this is with seeing or insight.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنهما narrates that the leader of the messenger ﷺ said:

إن الله تعالى قد رفع لي الدنيا فأنا أنظر إليها وإلى ما هو كائن فيها إلى يوم القيامة كأنما أنظر إلى كفي هذه

Translation:”Indeed Allah presented the whole world in front of me, so that I am seeing the whole world and everything that will occur in it till the day of Judgement, the way I see this palm of mine.”

Shah Abd al-Haq Muhadith al-Dehlawi رحمه الله says:

“No one (from the Ahle al-Haq) disagrees with this matter that the noble messenger of Allah ﷺ is alive with his blessed worldly life (in the blessed grave) and that he ﷺ is Hadir and Nazir over the state of his Ummah.

And that he ﷺ bestows blessing to those people seeking “Haqeeqah” and those who turn their attention towards him ﷺ and that he ﷺ gives them (spiritual) training (Tarbiyyah). And there is no doubt of (its meaning being) metaphorical nor of there being interpretation (from the apparent meaning), rather there is not even any room for suspicion of there being interpretation (of this).”
