Ruling on Three-days and Forty-days Gatherings after Demise

Question

What is the ruling regarding the customary three-days and forty-days gatherings held after the demise of a person? Is this practice established from the Sunnah?

Answer

It is permissible for people to gather on three days or on the fortieth day for the sending the reward of zikr or other good deeds to the demised person. And the origin of sending the reward is proven by the hadith.

But remember on the occasion of the demise of a person it is not allowed to gather to eat food.
